Balestrieri has demonstrated its extensive range of services across numerous unique projects and continues to be a trusted partner for expanding specialized services. A prime example is our work with the McHenry County Conservation District, which marks the second instance of Balestrieri constructing a snake hibernaculum. This vital habitat will provide safe overwintering space for local snake species, ensuring their survival during the harsh Wisconsin winters.
Before demolition could begin, a preliminary environmental inspection was conducted. Several outdated structures on the site, including old barns, a silo, and a residence, needed to be removed. These buildings contained asbestos and other hazardous materials, requiring careful removal and proper disposal to ensure the safety of workers and the environment. After the hazardous materials were removed, Balestrieri completed the demolition of all remaining structures on site. The land was then carefully graded to ensure proper drainage and native prairie grass was planted creating an optimal environment for the hibernaculum, ensuring that the land was properly restored to be enjoyed by all.
With the land prepared, Balestrieri’s skilled team began construction of the hibernaculum itself. The process involved digging a hole and strategically stacking large rocks to create the perfect overwintering space. This structure will serve as a safe refuge for local snakes, offering them shelter from the extreme winter conditions that are common in Wisconsin.
The completion of this project reflects Balestrieri’s commitment to environmental stewardship and our ability to deliver specialized construction solutions that support wildlife conservation efforts.
