Project Summary

Ever since it was founded in 1912, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) has been fundamental to the growth of the greater Milwaukee community. The first section of the main building was opened in 1920 under the name Milwaukee Vocational School. Once WWII began, the Army Signal Corps set up a training unit on campus and the facility welcomed a large number of women and African American students for the first time. The school began focusing on the new wartime technology to better suit the community’s and country’s needs.

In 1968, the Milwaukee Vocational and Adult School joined with the Milwaukee Institute of Technology to become the Milwaukee Technical College. The campus has seen several expansions since and is known today for providing over 200 associate degrees, technical diplomas, certificates, and apprentice programs across four campuses and two education centers. MATC is known as a national pioneer in sustainability efforts and green technology, and even has a wind turbine on their Mequon campus that contributes to 8% of the school’s electricity.

Because of its historic past, MATC has used the expert assistance of Balestrieri to abate several buildings over the years. Our professionalism and timeliness has made us their go-to Industrial Service Providers for operation and maintenance issues. Our largest project with MATC was the removal of the window lintels coated in lead paint on their main campus which is what the following project case study focuses on.

Services Provided by Balestrieri

  • Asbestos Abatement
  • Industrial Coating Removal

Challenge

Due to the age of the facility, the window lintels were in poor condition which made them difficult to safely reach and remove. Our team also had to complete work within a very strict timeline as classes needed to resume in the fall.

Solution

Our trained field personnel worked together with the masonry contractor to determine the most effective method of removing the lead coated lintels. We were able to skillfully eliminate the lead hazard prior to the deadline.
