At Balestrieri, protection of human health and the environment is our number one priority. We are committed to the safety of our employees, the employees of others on the job site, the general public, and the environment.
This is our commitment. But in order for a commitment to become a reality, actions must be taken to ensure safety education, procedures, and employee training remain up-to-date.
Associated General Contractors of Greater Milwaukee (AGC) Forum Member
Balestrieri Safety Manager, Steve Jandrowski, is a member of the AGC Safety Leaders Forum, comprised of safety managers for general contractors and specialty contractors (electricians, roofers, iron workers, masonry, etc.) invited by AGC to become members.
“What I like most is that I can ask any safety question and there will be someone in this group who can give experienced advice,” Jandrowski commented.
AGC works closely with the Wisconsin Safety Council and from time to time helps AGC to bring in speakers from OSHA and fall protection vendors, as well as organize demonstrations of new equipment and technologies.
Monthly Safety Meetings & Onsite Tool Box Talks
Each month, all field management and foreman/technicians discuss field-related safety audit notes and review a monthly topic specific to site or personal safety.
Quarterly refresher trainings are conducted for Balestrieri in-house with subjects such as equipment operations and maintenance, fire extinguishers, torching/hot work and fire watch, respirator fit testing and use, and Hazwoper/D.O.T. certification.
Implementing the use of Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (sUAV) increases safety by eliminating the need to access elevated locations via costly aerial platform lifts or ladders. If the structural integrity appears compromised from the drone footage, workers are saved from a potentially dangerous situation, and our clients have access to the footage for visual documentation.
Soon, we will incorporate 3D visualization, geographical mapping and volumetric measuring/estimating of bulk materials on a construction/demolition site.
Internal Safety Audits & Risk Control Service Plan
Balestrieri Environmental & Development also has an internal safety audit system in place for all project disciplines such as excavation, scaffolding or aerial lifts, and equipment operation.
Several safety items are job and season specific, and each item is inspected and maintained. Posting regulatory paperwork and proper signage is first and foremost on a jobsite. Hazard communication in the form of signage and demarcating a site is critical for OSHA communication and hazard communication alike.
“I have worked with the Balestrieri team performing safety & health audits alone and with Jandrowski,” says Bruce Morton from Marsh & McLennan. “This year we have focused on demolition to help promote safety at the jobs that tend to have more of a risk factor. Between the startup check list on these jobs, and the audits, Balestrieri has advanced their already exceptional safety & health program.”
Our clients look for safety, and we include it in their site orientation/procedures. Having an internal audit system in place acknowledges and enforces a safety culture for clients.
“There were a record number of audits done last year, and we are well on our way to a record number in 2017,” Steve Jandrowski says.
Early every year, a safety team comprised of Balestrieri employees from safety, field, and administration meet with Bruce Morton to discuss and name action items and tasks to be completed throughout the upcoming year. Areas of discussion and action include client contact, online resources, safety meetings, OSHA assistance, photo and video review, and approval for marketing pieces, onsite safety visits, resource sharing, webinars/seminars for our employees to attend and review, and discussion of carrier risk control reports. In addition to these items, there is also discussion and review of claims services including formal claims review, claim submission and experience mod review/smart comp discussions.
“From my perspective as HR Manager,” Nicole Cervantes says, “This collaboration gives more people in the office a voice and creates ownership in those individuals and a sense of accomplishment of a well done project. They also feel valued for their opinions in turn creating a purposeful team who support each other”
